Biographie

Yohannes Mulat Mekonnen is an Ethiopian filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist. He is currently a curatorial researcher at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne through the Gerda Henkel Research Fellowship and a Visual Anthropology Fellow at the Global Heritage Lab, University of Bonn. His research examines the ethical and political dimensions of representation at the intersection of visual anthropology and critical media studies, with particular attention to asymmetrical relations produced through representational practices. Drawing on his background in visual arts and formal training in visual anthropology, he approaches representation both as a narrative practice and an analytical method, combining audiovisual ethnography with the methodological possibilities of contemporary art.
His upcoming exhibition “WE ARE WHAT WE ARE NOT” about absence and memory is on show between May 7 and August 23.
